In 1954, a small group of local residents organized the Columbus Lowndes Community Chest with a mission of  assisting Lowndes County charities with their fund raising efforts. The efforts of these volunteers provided charities with more time to focus on their missions of serving the people of Lowndes County.

Over time, more community needs were recognized. In the mid-1970’s, the Columbus Lowndes Community Chest became incorporated as United Way of Lowndes County. We remain a volunteer-driven organization governed by a Board of Directors made up of men and women from throughout Lowndes County who represent our community at-large. While our primary purpose is to provide funding that is critical to the success of local organizations, our mission has grown in recent years to include community outreach and partnerships with local resources to address emerging issues and unmet needs that affect the quality of life for Lowndes County residents.
